The New Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 490 is flagship in a new generation of Jeanneau yachts. Her hull drawn by French naval architect Philippe Briand has taken its inspiration from the latest offshore racing boats to produce exceptional stability and speed while the powerful sail plan and cathedral standing rigging is easily managed.
Jeanneau have recognised that for many, the dropping of the mainsail and packing away can be hard work at sea, they have an in mast furling option for those that really want an easy option but for those who want the power of the batten mainsail, Jeanneau have developed a boom that is really low to the deck at the mast end to allow you to reach the lazy bag without climbing.
Because the hull of this boat has such performance potential, Jeanneau are also offering a performance version. The performance pack has a taller mast, laminate sail wardrobe, upgraded running rigging, extra winch and spinnaker deck fittings along with very sporty composite steering wheels finished in black so it looks as fast as she sails!
The cockpit on this new Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 490 is a revolution and is unique in the class. The side decks are wide with full bulwark style moulded toe rails and the innovative sloped side deck allows you to walk straight to and from the cockpit with no climbing over coamings. Another unique option is to be able to drop the cockpit coamings and create a large sun deck for lounging at anchor.
The cockpit table has also had a makeover, the table houses the switches for the optional electric transom, navigation and cockpit courtesy lighting and can even have a portable refrigerator to keep your drinks cold whether onboard or picnicking on the beach. The large swim platform makes access to the dock when stern too mooring or to the sea easy.
Under power there are two size options for the engine, either 45hp or 57hp both common rail diesel Yanmar models. The boat has retractable bow thruster option designed to give greater force due to its deeper position when deployed so short handed manoeuvring in tight marinas will not pose any problems.
Below decks interior designer Jean-Marc Piaton has given the new generation boats a completely new look and feel while remaining in the Jeanneau tradition of seaworthiness and function. He has given us new central galley designs that provide excellent access under way and lots of storage.
New wood finishes and textiles have been used to give super yacht styling and luxury, curved edges on cabinets and upholstered bulkheads are new to this class and combine to give completely different ambiance. But don’t be mistaken into thinking this is anything other than a Sun Odyssey, fiddles on worktops, handrails for moving around at sea etc are all still there because these boats are built for sailors by people who are sailors and function comes first.
The boat has three layouts with two, three and four double cabins all with rectangular beds; the master cabin in the two and three cabin layouts has a separate heads and shower rooms and is the largest in class. Large hull and roof ports throughout the boat provide amazing light and views of the sea.
Never before has a boat provided such amazing performance, ease of handling, style and comfort as this new range and without doubt it will become the benchmark for production boat building around the world.
